Bevans Black Opal & Cactus Nursery

The lure of opal attracted John & Elizabeth Bevan to Lightning Ridge. Love of gardening led to planting cacti and what began as a hobby became a labour of love spanning almost 50 years.

Situated on a gravel ridge with no natural soil, the gardens were created using road base, enriched with gypsum and manure. Tonnes of large ironstone rocks were used as borders. Private collections of old cacti were purchased and the gardens now contain a number of plants over 100 years old.

Bougainvillea was established to provide a colourful backdrop and JADE (Portulacaria Afra) was planted and trimmed into hedges. We believe these hedges are unique to Lightning Ridge. In spring and summer the cacti flowers rival the magnificent colours of the opals,

Our shop offers a display of jewellery, opals and a wide range of souvenirs to select from, as a memento of your visit.

We carry a large range of unset solid opals, doublets and triplets for the making of fine jewellery or for investment. Private viewing by appointment.

This business established by John and Elizabeth almost 50 years ago, is still owned and operated by the Bevan Family.

Consequently, we can offer the services of a locally born guide to either show you the town and its' environs or take you on a day trip to other mining fields. The guide is an experienced opal miner.
